all I hear is beuller, beuller

I am in Astronomy class right now and my professor is lecturing about the planets. I am having a difficult time focusing and staying awake, even with this large mug of coffee. It is Friday, yes Rebecca Black, and it has been such a busy week. My mind is somewhere else after two essays and a midterm just in one class this week. I feel like I am in Ferris Beuller's Day Off, when the professor jsut continues to repeat his name in this rediculous monotone voice. I just want it to be 12:15 and I can finally get out and get some nomble In'N'Out.

Here is some music that has been helping me stay alive:

Best Coast "When I'm With You"

Gobble Gobble "Lawn Knives"

Black Lips "Good, Bad, Not Evil"

Bob Dylan "I Want You"

Patsy Cline "Imagine That"

The Andrews Sisters "Shoo Shoo Baby"

Enjoy this Friday! YAY FOR THE 3 DAY WEEKEND!

Took my first midterm of this summer session today at 8 a.m. with only 3 hours of sleep and wow... after 2 1/2 weeks, I have read and learned a bunch. And he assigned work for tonight too... let me just say... NO! I hope I did alright. Well, that's all. Off to make BBQ veggie burgers and eat lots of chips and salsa. NOMMMMM

little people

Warning: my brain is mushy, too much reading, listening, thinking, and answering for the day so do not judge my horrible writing in this blog.

I came across this new art form recently and have been following the "Little People" blog. The street artist Slinkachu has been placing small figures in silly situations with found objects or natural settings. It is a really cool idea I think and the photos are great. They make me laugh and I know if I saw this one day while walking on the street, it would make me smile. It is an interesting take on street art because normally we think of street art as graffiti, tagging, or paper images mounted on walls. However, this is a unique approach and makes me want to look around my surroundings more and see what could be.

The photographs make this unique street art very effective and create these small worlds in the bigger whole. The different images show how up close it looks like some large person but zoom out and it's this tiny figure compared to our large world. The titles of pieces are also very clever and work well with the overall finished project.

Some of my favorite images are:

hike of death

Yesterday was basically one of the best days I have had in a while. I am in a P.E. class that usually meets for two hours by the beach, three times a week. It is a great class and I enjoy doing light to hard workouts a few times a week. Usually, I play some beach volleyball, walk up and down the beach, or jog. However, yesterday my teacher opted for everyone to meet in the hills for a "fun" hike. The weather was finally cleared up from all the clouds and rain, and I was really excited. We arrived at the meeting place and went over some administrative business and then started on our adventure.

I was in the middle of the group and after a while, my friend and I realized we were off roading. There was barely a trail/path and we were basically going vertically up the hill. It then turned into rock climbing, something I have not done in this way since I was maybe ten years old. It was a lot of work but paid off when we all made it to the huge waterfall and gorgous view of the hills to the ocean.

On the way back, Megan almost died. Haha sorry, not to laugh but now that it is over, I have to laugh. She was slipping on our way down because it was so steep and the ground was unstable. She then slid and grabbed a tree branch, doing a huge 360 degree spin and landing hard on the side of the mountain hard. We all froze, in shock, and then ran to help her because the roots she was holding on to were detaching from the ground. Thankfully, she is okay and we all made it down safely but I will never forget that hike. We were all talking about how bonding it was and how much it pushed us, us being off the path and basically climbing rocks and unstable ground, to get to the top of this waterfall. I got somewhat got over my fear of heights while hugging rocks and not looking down at the long drop it would be if I fell.

inspiring artists

I came across an artist from Belgium named Dave Decat. He is featured on Sixpack France an amazing website that allows artists from all over to sell their artwork on clothing, etc. Decat especially stood out to me because of his style of drawing people. I like how he draws people out of proportion and with a simple, cartoony feel. He also stood out to me because my friend, a fellow young artist in my town, made a stencil a couple years ago of a russian tattooed mobster that looks similar to the characters on the t-shirts. If they weren't so expensive, I would totally buy a couple of these. But sadly, I am still a poor, struggling college student and can only admire them from my computer screen.

Another artist featured on the website is Justin Krietemeyer from the U.S. He has a really great style and has really bright, colorful, layered pieces. I use lots of layers and images in some of my graphic artwork and his work is very inspirational. I also like his use of symmetry, which I also like to use in some art. He uses mirrored images and layers them which I think works very well.

everynone... yes everynone

First off, I am exhausted. I have a huge paper (not huge in length, huge in amount of work for it) due at 8 am tomorrow. I am not a philosophical person when it comes to government and human functionality, making it extremely difficult. I am still hungry. The sunflower seeds that I have been chewing on incessantly have ripped my mouth to shreds and made it more dry then a desert. I'm still pink a little from jogging earlier. Yay for being pasty! Sorry for the rant, but it needed to happen.

Anywho....

My friend showed me this website to visit earlier today. It is a few cool videos and thought I might post it in case anyone hasn't seen it.

I liked the first one titled Symmetry so much. The music in the background fit perfectly and the sounds in the scenes worked perfectly. A loud pop! or quiet movement of leaves added a lot to this short film. Even with some cheesy shots and stories, the video kept me incredibly engaged. Some shots reminded me of something or someone, evoking emotions and feelings I haven't had in some time. I didn't watch the last one, but I wanted to space them out so I don't see how similar they are.

Remember: just watch the whole thing!

So I found out I got the art scholarship as well as another scholarship so I am extremely excited to start making some art in the next few weeks/months. I have been looking up inspiring street art and graphic design work to try to get me back into doing art outside of class.

One street artist I really like is 6pack and he is from Paris. He has had work show up all over Europe and some parts of L.A. I love his unique style and his use of funky characters and spin on everyday objects, such as the bicycle shown below.

This is one of my favorite pieces.

This is done by a street artist in San Francisco (where I lived in Fall 2010). San Francisco has some amazing graffiti and stencil art on everything, from the sidewalk to side of a building, to cars. I love when street art can be more then just writing a name or quote, but real art. The second and third pictures remind of me of some futuristic apocalyptic bacteria taking over. Haha, kinda random but that's what I like.

johnny cash festival

I am also soooo excited because the Johnnny Cash Festival is coming up in mid-June in beautiful and beach side Ventura California. I went a few years ago and had a lot of fun. We drove down in my friends old car and had a great time. They had good food, awesome live music, and lots of cars to check out. I love everything old, meaning from the 1930s-1960s and car shows are like going back to that time.

I am very excited about this festival because I am going to be entering the Pin-Up Girl Contest. I hope to get chosen for the 20 finalists that will be attending the festival. If you come, please vote for me :)

(I'm in the middle)

free car show!

I am sooooo excited for the next few weeks! I do have class Monday-Friday for the next few weeks but I am glad there are going to be fun things to do on the weekends.

First up, is Wheels and Waves Classic Car and Hot Rod Show! It is this Sunday, downtown Santa Barbara and will feature some amazing cars. I made it to the show last year and had so much fun!!! The city closes off a few blocks of State Street to allow all these great classic cars to park and be shown off to the public. I know a few people who should be entering in it and I hope to see my dream car, 1964 Black Lincoln Continental with suicide doors, black leather interior, but that's just me :)

Hope to see you all there! There will be a cruise around town for all old cars/motorcycles so be sure to look out for some loud, gorgeous, fast, and fun cars!

hipster

I really enjoy drawing characters and I like drawing different "hipsters" or "stereotypes" of people. I started drawing them in high school with pens, markers, paint pens, and ink. I really like drawing in ink because it is not perfect and it can get messy. This is what I just drew for my friend Tawny. Enjoy!

roller derby!

Yesterday was SO FUN! Me and some lady friends went to the local roller derby game to support the Brawlin' Betties. They played a great game and completely owned the Prison City Derby Dames. I have never seen a live derby game and I was impressed. The girls were rough, tough, and not afraid to fall down. I think it would be a fun stress reliever and who knows, maybe I'll get better at skating and try out sometime. Another event I support and urge everyone to go to. It is so entertaining and the crowd is really involved.

Here's some pics from the game:

miss valentine's house

I used to live with my friend, the lovely miss valentine, and our house was pretty awesome, if I do say so myself. We both love anything old/vintage/retro and filled it with fun, quirkey things. She nows lives on her own and I love the way she designed it.

Here are some photos of her apartment:

first thursday

I went to First Thursday for the first time in a while on Cinco de Mayo. First Thursdays are the first Thursday of every month, downtown opens up all the galleries and shops feature artists but it is all free to the public. It's a great day to explore the arts in this area, with music performances all over State Street and free exhibits. My favorite opening was at the gorgeous Granada Theatre and titled "Zombies." The paintings were very cool and I loved the use of only red, white, and black in some of the pieces.

These paintings were really awesome upclose, with the messy paint strokes and lots of textures. They were all so different but worked well together in the show. The artists' style is unique and I hope to see more of her art work. You all should go out and experience First Thursdays sometime in the future. They are especially fun in the summer because it is so pretty out and the weather's nice.

fin!

I finally had my last final and I am done!!!!!!!! Woohoo!!!!!!

I am so happy and cannot wait to celebrate. Congratulations to all the seniors and everyone else for finishing strong!

Happy Cinco De Mayo everyone!

exploring typography

One book used in my design class is Exploring Typography: An In-Depth Guide to the Art and Techniques of Contemporary Typography by Tova Rabinowitz. Throughout the semester, we read and were tested on each chapter in the book. I really enjoyed reading this book because there was so much about typography I didn't know. This book gives a very detailed look into the world of typography and examples of artists in the design field.

My favorite designer featured in the book is Art Chantry. The interview with the artist is great and gives a lot of good advice for up and coming designers. I really like his style and colors he uses. He is very smart about his use of color with positive and negative space. I like his vintage style in the poster for Kustom Kulture. It reminds me of old car shows I have gone too, with pin striping, black and white photos, use of red, yellow, black, and green, fonts used, and graphics. I also really like his poster called Crockshock! with all the monster like faces, funky handwritten font, and minimal use of color.

Here are some of my favorite excerpts from his article:

"I made a pact with myself years ago that I won't help jerks just for the oney. Money only lasts so long, and then it's gone." - Art Chandry, Exploring Tyography

_________________________________________________________________

I like his attitude towards the art world. He would rather pass up a job that pays well if the job helps a cause/product/client he doesn't agree with. I want to be the same way when I go into this field after college. I want to work with good people and for good causes, rather than just for the money.

_________________________________________________________________

"What advice do you have for design students and new dsigners who are just entering the field today?
Expect it to be tough. It was always tough, and it will always be tough. The real reason to do graphic design for a iving is because you love it. Without that, it's a terrible and difficult choice for a career. So, if you plan to do it for money or power or fame or fashion, you need to rethink your goals."
- Art Chandry, Exploring Tyography

_________________________________________________________________

I really liked this quote because he is being honest and telling how the graphic design world is. It is sort of reassuring though to me because I am extremely passionate about this kind of art and I want to be in the graphic design field for a career. I am not concerned with money, fame, or power but I really love the computer graphics design world. I hope to one day make a living on designing posters, CD packaging, book covers, etc. and his words give me motivation to work my hardest to make my dream a reality (however cheesey that sounds).

finals week

I woke up bright and early today because I have my first of four finals at noon. I cannot wait for this week to be done and enjoy this weekend! Today has already started out great because my roommate made everyone cinnamon rolls :) She is THE BEST! This will be a tough, long, caffeine free week and I cannot wait for it to be over.

exit through the giftshop

We were given a weekend assignment to watch the controversial documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop a few weeks ago. The assignment also asked for us to write a review with our thoughts about the film. The film was created by the world famous street artist, Banksy, who took footage from an unknown film maker and complied the important footage into this film.

Here are some excerpts from my art journal entry:

"It was really interesting to see the life of street artists documented and shown because you walk by art on the street all over the U.S., Europe, and world but no clue how exactly they get there."

"I don't think any of Mr. Brain Wash was anything unique or new. He didn't try something new or change something already done dramatically. He just used the same styles other people use, same images, etc."

"I think it's also a difficult subject because he is selling "his" pieces for thousands of dollars when he didn't really do the art. He isn't the graphic artist that create that graphic. He isn't a sculptor creating the wall of televisions. He just told people what to make and put his name on it. I feel like the artists he hired used their own style in the artwork... so do they get credit? Adequate payment? Notoriety?"

Some more thoughts after a few weeks after watching the movie:

I think it was biased and showed Terry in a negative way but I think they made the film with a sarcastic and playful tone. The film showed the rise of street art and one man's journey from unknown film maker and family man to a popular and selling artist. I liked seeing the behind the scenes footage, from going on top of buildings at 3 AM to the Disneyland incident. The Disneyland incident was one of the craziest parts of the movie because I had never heard of this happening and I didn't know how intense security is at the famous park.

Everyone should see this movie, especially if you are into street art at all. It is a growing movement and becoming somewhat a fine art. Many street artists are now seen in galleries and museums all over the world. Hope you all get a chance to see it!

final: create a book?

The final assingment for class was to create a book. I was overwhelmed at first, with only five days to create it. I decided to do the book on tattoos and use artistic photographs with quotations to showcase this artwork.

Here are some examples of the photographs enclosed in the book:

The published book turned out great! But it's only 38 pages and I am going to keep adding pages and quotations to create a longer book.

logo design

My favorite assignment given this semester was definitely our stationary design project. The assignment was to design an envelope, paper, and business card for our personal use. I was so excited to design an all new logo, different than the one I made last year. The logo would be incorporated in each piece of the stationary. I began by making a list of things that I wanted to include or I felt inspired by for the logo and business card design. Then, I sketched out ideas for business cards and logos.

These were just messy quick sketches but I finally decided on the web design and swirly design. I scanned in these sketches and created the final designs in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign.

Here's some of the final products.

We were fortunate enough to have our business cards printed and I am so glad because I have been able to give them out for potential work in the art field.
